About Applied Bio-nomics
Committed to superior quality & results.
Since our beginning in 1980, we have been world leaders in the introduction and implementation of biological pest controls. Applied was the first company to introduce growers to many now-familiar products including; Stratiolaelaps scimitus (previously called Hypoaspis miles), Stethorus punctillum, and Delphastus catalinae.
Our products are used internationally in such varied applications as in banana crops in Costa Rica, arborvitae in Oregon, pepper crops in British Columbia, roses in Holland, hops in Washington State, and butterfly conservatories in Niagara, Ontario. Most of our products are equally suited to outdoor gardens and glasshouses.
In 2005, Applied decided to eliminate all cold storage of our products. Repeated scientific trials showed consistently that any duration of storage below 8 to 9 degrees Celsius impaired both the searching ability of the flying insects and the sex ratios in the mites – factors critical to efficacy in crops. Being at both the cutting edge of research and always ensuring quality over quantity, we have been able to provide bio-control for more sensitive crops and offer more cost-efficient and successful bio-control programs.
History
Greenhouse Biological Control Commercial Development in Canada and the Development of Industry Standards
Pioneering the green: the rise of biocontrol in the green.
Greenhouse biological control has a long history in Canada. The whitefly parasite Encarsia formosa was first obtained from the Cheshunt Experimental Station in England in 1935 and mass production was started by J.H McLeod at the Dominion Parasite Laboratory in Ontario. McLeod shipped more than 18 million Encarsia parasites to Canadian greenhouse growers from 1938-1954.
He reported that the parasites had been sent by railway and ship to Newfoundland as well as by rail to all provinces of the Dominion. Unfortunately, with the development of DDT and other new pesticides in the ’40s the mass production of the parasites was all but discontinued by 1955.
